Watson followed Crompton into his office. ‘Boss, I tried to get hold of you when Angie turned up.’

‘I know. I got your messages.’ Crompton was looking straight at Watson.

‘I thought you may have wanted to be here, that’s all.’

‘I had important business to take care of. Any problems I should know?’

‘No, no. We will get off now.’ Watson left the office, confused. Did I just miss something there?

DCI Watson was quiet. Monteith threw him a glance as he pulled out into traffic and headed towards Thelwell. He put the car stereo on to break the silence.

‘Old MacDonald had a farm, ee i ee i oh,’ Monteith started singing.

‘What the hell are you listening to?’ Watson finally said, staring out of the window.

‘Oh, so you are alive… Just one of Pixie’s CDs. Thought we would have some music on.’ Monteith, straight-faced, burst into singing again. ‘With a quack-quack here and a quack-quack there...’

Watson reached over and turned it off.

‘Ok grumpy, what’s up?’

‘Don’t know. I am convinced there is something Crompton is not telling us.’

‘You still on about that, guv?’ Monteith shook his head. ‘If he has something to tell that we need to know, he will. Now we need to get more information on these killings.’

Just outside Thelwell, they heard sirens. Monteith looked in his mirror and spotted blue lights coming up from behind fast. They pulled over with the traffic and watched two Volvo squad cars and a Volvo dog handling car flash by.

‘Looks like somebody called for taxis to take them into town,’ Watson grinned.

Monteith burst out laughing.

A couple of minutes later, Monteith pulled up outside Freeman’s flat. They noticed that there were no lookouts outside the shop across the road this time.

‘They must have gone to see which house the squad cars have been called to,’ Watson commented, getting out.

They walked up to the door, knocked, and showed their ID to the camera. Sheila opened the door and led them into her office. It was a bit more tidy, leaving them room to sit.

‘What can I do for you today, gentlemen? I assume it’s about Ronald Freeman?’

Watson started, ‘When we were here before, you mentioned that Ronald said he was being followed. Can you help us with that? Did he say was it someone on foot or in a car?’

Sheila sat back. ‘He mentioned nothing directly to me. It was something that Elizabeth commented on him saying.’

‘How about the others that work here? Could he have said something to them?’

‘It’s possible. Do you want to talk to them?’ Sheila picked up a radio. ‘Mike, Steven, can you come to the office, please?’ Both answered that they were on their way.

‘Are you any closer to catching who did this?’ Sheila asked. ‘I saw on the news you are looking for a serial killer.’

‘Investigations are ongoing but don’t always believe what the media say,’ Monteith said. His phone went off as he was speaking. He looked at the screen, shook his head, typed something and put it away.

Watson rolled his eyes.
